Ray's Rant: Android

Alright everyone, I know Android has a market share of 40% in the US so people obviously use it. A lot. But I can't stand idly by and watch as Bro Council readers buy phones running this operating system. I have used Android and it would fall beneath iOS, Windows Phone, and even WebOS (RIP) in terms of usability and design. For those of you who question my qualifications for ranting on Android let's look at the phones I've used over the past couple years:

  • HTC-6700 - Windows Mobile - Giant Brick
  • HTC Touch Pro - Windows Mobile - Smaller Brick, tiny screen
  • HTC Touch Pro 2 - Windows Mobile with HTC Sense - Slightly larger screen, still brick-ish
  • Samsung Blackjack - Windows Mobile Portrait - Fake BlackBerry, had it for work - hated it
  • Blackberry Bold - BlackBerry OS - Not as addicting as you would think
  • HTC Evo 4G - Android - Good intentions, horrible execution
  • iPhone 4 - iOS - Didn't want to cave to Apple/caved and loved it
  • HTC Arrive - Windows Phone 7 - Love it, hardware could be better but the OS is my favorite yet

So as you can see, I have some experience with both good and bad phones (seriously, I still hate the thought of the Blackjack). So what's so bad about Android? I'm going to make another list. Lists are easy to read, and easier to write. I'm about to show off my limited journalistic abilities with a list!

  1. It's slow. The new Droid Bionic is set to launch for $300 with a dual-core processor running at 1ghz on EACH core. 2ghz for a mobile operating system? It will still probably chug along when you try to load your Facebook app though.
  2. The battery life. It's great that you have a 2ghz processor inside, but that means more power draw. Plus, most people don't realize their fancy Android water-flow or falling leave screen saver kills the battery too. Combine those together and it's good if you can get through the day...don't get me started on 4G...
  3. Widgets. Maybe it's just me, but widgets bother me. I don't have much else to say about them. Even the name..."widgets". Ugh.
  4. Icons everywhere! I like to keep a neat desktop on my computer because it makes things easier to find, and in turn makes my computer easier to use. iOS has folders to store programs, Windows Phone has Live Tiles which are awesome, Android has icons...and widgets.
  5. Freezes and crashes. Everyone makes fun of Windows for crashes based on Windows 95...but Android is like Windows ME - yeah, it has that many crashes (side note - Windows ME was horrible, and horribly named)
  6. Malware. Want malicious software on your cell phone? Buy Android. via Wired - Android Malware Explodes

So that's my rant for the day. Sometimes I just need to go off, and usually it will be about technology. Today was one of those days after I saw the $300 price on the Droid Bionic - although Android is cheap to license (kind of) the cost of the hardware required to run the OS at a usable level is ridiculous. Bro Council readers: go buy a Windows Phone or iPhone and ditch your Android.
