The people in my life that know me well also know just how important of a role my pets, both of which are rescue animals, play in my life. My dog is a lab-chow mix whose mother was so severely abused that when taken from her "owners" she was minutes from being put down before they found that she was pregnant. The other is an 8 year old Manx cat who was taken from his mother at 3 weeks and, while only weighing half a pound, was about to be left in the woods by his "owners."
For the people that know me, it's also no secret that I like animals more than I like most people, and I detest those who neglect and abuse animals. Don't worry - I am not against hunting. Hey, I'm a guy and I love eating meat. Plus, I grew up in a small town where hunting was a staple of life, so I respect it even though it's not something that I do.
Recently I found out about another man who wanted to stand up for those who can't do it themselves. Gordon Shell was a Mixed Martial Arts fighter who last year was told by doctors that he should not ever step into the ring again due to a heart condition. Despite that warning, he still fought one last match in order to donate all of his prize purse to the Michigan Humane Society and other local pit bull groups.
One of my favorite things about Mr. Shell are the shirts that he has been selling to raise proceeds. It's the same shirt that he wore to the ring in his charity fight; a plain white t-shirt emblazoned with the words "Fight Me Mike Vick." Did he actually challenge the formerly-jailed QB to a fight? He did, and the response was what you would expect. "He never replied" Shell stated.
Even though this column is called "A Guy's Rant" I'll spare you from my anger-filled rant on what a piece of garbage I think Michael Vick is, and that I am all for imposing laws that will allow the same treatment to those convicted of animal cruelty as they imposed on the animals themselves. I figure most of that would get censored anyway since this is a site for respectable men.
So instead of my rant, I'll leave you with a few quotes. And here is a link to donate to the Humane Society, and if you'd like to purchase the Michael Vick shirts you can do that here. Well done, Gordon Shell.
