Dear Rachel,
Do girls like jerks? I'm thinking about being more of a jerk. Should I be? It seems like that's what girls like.
Rachel's Take: If you're referring to a specific scenario between you, a girl, and a jerk, the situation often looks like this:
Nice guy pursues a girl he's interested in, (taking his time/moving slowly/acting passively) as to show that he (respects her/doesn't want to scare her away/has no self-confidence), when out of nowhere, in swoops some jerk who (doesn't respect her/treats her like crap/has a lot of chutzpah) and somehow the girl leaves the nice guy in the dust and runs off with the jerk. How rude. Nice guy... Read More
Dear BC,
I'm dating a girl, we're in love, and we have both stated that we want to be married and that we have never felt a love like this in our lives. We have talked extensively about marriage, our futures, and how strong our love is for each other. Now, we were moving forward with engagement (ring purchasing, talking to parents) and out of the blue, she told me that she has feelings for her ex-boyfriend and she doesn't know what that means.
She said it may be nothing, but she misses him and doesn't know if that means she cares for him or just that she misses something comfortable. She said she wants to talk with him, and I don't like that... Read More
What is the best thing you can do as a guy to impress a woman?
-Spencer
Emily's Take: If there was a magic answer to this question, it would be – be yourself!
There's no magic formula that I can give you to guarantee that a random woman will be impressed by you. We're all different so while one woman may find your jokes funny, the next will find them annoying. It depends on our moods too; one day I'm in a mood to laugh and the next I'd rather have an intellectual conversation.
Some are impressed by your musical talents, intellect or sense of humor and then you have woman that are most impressed by your bank account balance or the... Read More
Hey... so I'm a twenty-one year old art student and basically I'm trying to break into mainstream America and it's snazzy dating scene. Unfortunately, I've got a few issues that I'd like your insight on.
I'm not a bro - I don't watch sports. Also, my city has a very angry "bro scene" and I'm too in love with life to walk around with a flat-billed hat and look angry all the time.
I can't pop my collar or wear funny looking clothes. Should I just get a suit? Not a black one but a tan one like all the Irish guys wear in Goodfellas?
I have no idea what to talk about. All I do is read, go fishing, and work on my stuff. What am I going to... Read More
If there was something that a guy could "Ask A Woman" to make her want to go on a date without fail, what would that something be?
Tony
Emily's Take: There's no magic question that will work on all ladies. We're all different and have different things that we're interested in. For me, I think it is important that a guy I'm chatting up is interested about me and doesn't make me carry the conversation myself. I think you should ask questions about the woman's job, family, hometown, etc. Find things that you have in common and chat that up. Make her feel like you're interested in her on a deeper level than just her physical appearance and chances... Read More
